Deciding On Breast Augmentation Surgery

The decision to have breast augmentation surgery is a personal one. Each person has a particular image of themselves; some are totally dissatisfied with their bodies while others are perfectly happy “with the hand they have been dealt with”.

Breast Augmentation can change your body and add shape to a flat chest

Once you have decided to go for breast augmentation you will need to find a surgeon who  is recommended.

Ways  to find a recommended breast augmentation surgeon:

1. You could contact your local G.P. who may be able to recommend a surgeon or breast augmentation specialist that they have dealt with.
2. Look on the internet and find a clinic that specializes in this kind of surgery and make an appointment for a consultation.
3. Recommendation from a friend or family member who has had breast augmentation.
4. Contact a local cosmetic surgeon, or phone your local hospital as they might have more details on breast augmentation and breast augmentation surgery.

After deciding to have breast augmentation and once you have found someone recommended then you will have a consultation with the surgeon, he or she will discuss the various methods of breast augmentation, a medical history will be taken, a thorough examination and many questions will be asked at the first consultation.  It is important that you give an honest and true history of your own medical conditions, and medical conditions that family members may have experienced.

Once you and your surgeon have decided on the type of breast augmentation procedure, and dependent on the choice the actual breast augmentation procedure could be done either by staying overnight at the hospital or you could be treated as an outpatient. If you opt for the outpatients route, the procedure will be performed in the operating room, and you will go home after you spent a few hours in the recovery room. The average length of time to perform the operation usually takes between one and two hours. You will be given a choice having a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic.

Basic Breast Augmentation Procedure Explanied:

What will happen is an incision will be made at an appropriate place in your breast. There are three common sites to choose from. The decision together with your surgeon is to choose the site that will allow the breast augmentation procedure to be performed with the least stress to you and the surgeon and to be left with the smallest scar. The surgeon will want you to have a speedy breast augmentation recovery.

The three most common incision sites are:

  • Under the arm this is called the axillary site, If the incision is made in this site the surgeon will use a probe to which a miniature camera is fitted plus very small instruments, the surgeon will then create a ‘pocket’ for the breast implant.
  •  The incision is made around the areolae of the nipple this is called periareolar, the actual incision will be barely discernable when healed, because it is done in the crease of the periareolar.
  •  The third site choice is done within the breast fold called the inframammary. This fold is sited under the breast.

In order to create the smallest incision the surgeon will create a small “pocket” or space in the breast tissue and place the implant. The implant will be inserted empty and only filled with saline once in place. Once it is positioned and filled, the incision will be closed usually with sutures, however some surgeons will use tape.

Breast augmentation operations have been performed by experienced surgeons for a number of years. Surgeons who are well known in the business have a good success rate with breast augmentation surgery. This is reassuring and you know that you will be in good hands.

The end result – perfect larger and fuller breasts

Some points on deciding which site to choose for your breast augmentation procedure, this is important should you be considering having a baby and wish to breast feed the baby.

  • Periareolar – the incision is smallest and leaves the least visible scar, however this carries the highest likelihood of being unable to successfully breast feed.
  • Inframammary – The incision is more visible than the periareolar and offers a better chance of being able to breast feed.
  • Axillary –  the incision is also less concealed, and also carries a greater chance of being able to breast feed.

After surgery you will be given instructions on any do’s and don’t to ensure you have a speedy breast augmentation recovery as well as general after surgery care instructions. Once the breast augmentation procedure and healing has taken place you should be pleased with your new body shape.
